Why this exists

Birth attendants hold so much.

We witness intensity, beauty, grief, uncertainty, responsibility, joy, and profound transformation.

We hold women, babies, and families through some of the most vulnerable moments of life, often with very little space ourselves to be witnessed and held.

In recent months, conversations with birth attendants from around the world revealed a shared experience: many of us are carrying similar struggles and questions, often quietly and in isolation.

From these conversations, the Ubuntu Birth Attendant Reflection Spiral was born.

This is not another educational offering.

This is a place to arrive as peers.

A place to bring stories from practice, to reflect, to debrief, to listen deeply, and to remember that we are not alone.

What is Ubuntu Birth Attendant Reflection Spiral?

UBUNTU:
“I am because we are.”

This three-session pilot round is a small, confidential circle for those involved in attending births.

Together, we will create a space rooted in:

• Deep listening
• Reflection rather than fixing
• Shared wisdom rather than hierarchy
• Curiosity rather than performance
• Presence rather than teaching

Limited to 12 participants.

Closed group.

The same group journeying together over all three sessions.

🌿 Why Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a Southern African philosophy often expressed through the phrase:

“I am because we are.”

It speaks to our interconnectedness, the understanding that our humanity is shaped, strengthened, and remembered through relationship with one another.

Birth work can be profoundly beautiful and meaningful, but it can also be isolating. Many birth attendants carry immense responsibility, intensity, uncertainty, grief, and tenderness with very few spaces themselves to be witnessed and supported.

In choosing the name Ubuntu Birth Attendant Reflection Spiral, we wanted to honour the importance of community, mutual respect, shared wisdom, and the understanding that we do not walk this path alone.

This Spiral is rooted not in hierarchy or performance, but in deep listening, reflection, shared humanity, and the belief that there is wisdom already present within the circle.

What the Pilot Includes:

Three live online gatherings

Session length: 2 hours

Group size: Maximum 12 participants

Format: Closed circle

Sessions will not be recorded in order to protect confidentiality, honesty, and presence.

Foundations of the Space

The Ubuntu Birth Attendant Reflection Spiral is rooted in Nancy Kline’s Thinking Environment and the understanding that the quality of our attention affects the quality of thinking.

Practices we may weave through the sessions include:

ROUNDS

A simple practice where each person is offered uninterrupted space to speak and be heard.

THINKING PAIRS

Breakout rooms where one person listens deeply while another thinks aloud.

DIALOGUE

Exploring questions together without needing to convince or fix.

COUNCIL PROCESS

Speaking and listening from lived experience.

INCISIVE QUESTIONS

Questions that gently uncover assumptions and invite fresh thinking.

This is not supervision.

Not therapy.

Not performance.

Not proving.

More a place of reflection, practice wisdom, and shared humanity.

Who is for?

Those involved in birth work, including:

Midwives

Traditional birth attendants

Birthkeepers

Doulas

Student practitioners

Others actively attending births
